Hazel Belvo (born Centerville, Ohio, 1934). Group of two relief prints titled "Spirit Tree Torso" and "Roots of the Spirit Tree." Hazel Belvo first laid a gift of tobacco at the base of the Grand Portage Spirit Tree in 1961. Ma-ni-do Gee-zhi-gance, formerly colloquially known as the "Witch Tree," and now recognized as the Spirit Tree, is a 400-year-old cedar on the bank of Minnesota's north shore. The tree has spiritual significance to the Ojibwe people and would become a strong, reoccurring presence in Belvo's work as an affirmation of her connection with the universe. The M holds five of Belvo's reflections on the Spirit Tree in the permanent collection and is planning a retrospective of her work to open in fall 2023. The artwork will come with a book that features poetry by Joanne Hart alongside images of Belvo's prints. Each; height: 8 in x width: 8 in.
