Albumen photograph depicting Fort Snelling at the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers.

The first fort on this site was erected in 1819 and was called Fort St. Peters and also New Hope. The second fort was erected a year later in 1820 and called Camp Cold Waters, so named for the natural springs which sat below the structure. The cornerstone of the permanent post was laid in 1820 and was named Fort St. Anthony, though this was later changed to Fort Snelling in 1825.
