John Runk (American, 1878-1964). Gelatin silver print photograph depicting a train derailment in Stillwater on August 23, 1928. Inscribed "No. 1 Photo by John Runk Aug 23 - 1928 Stillwater Junction, Minn." along the lower margin.

John Runk began a photography business in Stillwater, Minnesota in 1899, though he had been taking photographs for years prior to that. Aside from the photographs he took himself, he also devoted much of his time to locating, preserving, and copying historical photographs. Beginning in the 1930s, Runk began donating his photographs to the Stillwater Library, the Washington County Historical Society, and the Minnesota Historical Society.

Sight; height: 7 in x width: 10 3/4 in. Matted; height: 10 3/4 in x width: 14 3/4 in.

Condition

There are no major tears or creases. The emulsion is smooth. There are a few minute losses along the edges of the sheet. There is a network of scratches along the lower right corner. The sheet is dry mounted to the mat. There is wear and losses to the mat.
