Kano Josen Chikanobu (Japanese, 1660-1728). Edo period scroll painting depicting a samurai fording a river, painted in ink and watercolor on silk. Bordered by a silk brocade matting. The painting is signed Chikanobu hitsu with a red seal and it is executed with strong detail and features bold colors.
Huaxin; height: 41 1/2 in x width: 15 1/2 in. Scroll; height: 72 in x width: 20 in. The painting has areas of creasing, toning throughout, and some surface soiling. The paper along the top and bottom of the scroll is in poor condition with tears and losses throughout; the paper is brittle in these areas. Evidence of moisture exposure along the verso throughout. The scroll is missing one scroll end. The top bar of the scroll is detached.
