Carl Rawson was born in Des Moines, Iowa. He studied art at Cumming Art School, the Minneapolis School of Art, and the National Academy of Design in New York. He made his home in Minneapolis in 1906 for a position as a cartoonist for the Minneapolis Tribune where he worked for nine years. After leaving the Tribune he made a living by painting portraits and then idyllic landscapes from the Hudson River to Minnesota. His favorite topic was the North Shore of Lake Superior, where he found scenes for his brush many times.

Condition

The item is in generally good condition with no visible tears, creases, or losses. No visible sign of restoration under UV light. The surface is stable. The item is toned, most noticeable along the upper margin. There is wear along the upper and lower margin; the underlying board is shown along the upper and lower margins. Along the back of the board, there is toning and heavy soiling; there are paint accretions that do not affect the recto; there is a pencil mark. Not framed.
