Group of two 19th c. Russian silver niello cases, both decorated in an equestrian theme. One depicts a chariot and the other a troika. Both monogrammed along the underside. Both with impressed Kokoshnik marks, one with an assay mark dated 1873, and makers' marks.
Single horse; height: 2 1/2 in x width: 4 1/4 in x depth: 1/2 in. Three horse; height: 2 1/2 in x width: 4 1/2 in x depth: 1 1/2 in. Both cases are in great condition in general with no major dents, cracks, or chips. None of them show sings of restoration when inspected under UV light. Both have light wear throughout; there are dents along two corners, which are not visible at arm's length. The troika case shows light discoloration due to oxidation along its inner side, which is expected due to its material. The chariot case has white accretions in recessed areas along the outer side of the case; along the interior, there is discoloration and oxidation toward the corners.
