Walter Launt Palmer (American, 1854-1932). Oil on canvas painting depicting a sailboat on a sunny sea, 1892. Signed and dated along the lower right.
As the son of sculptor Erastus Dow Palmer, Walter Launt Palmer received an early exposure to art. In 1870 Palmer began taking lessons from Frederic Edwin Church, and in 1872, when he was only 18, Palmer’s work was accepted by the National Academy of Design for an exhibition. Palmer studied in Paris until 1876. It was during his time in Paris that Palmer’s work became influenced by Emile Auguste Carolus-Duran. He also became acquainted with Carolus-Duran's student John Singer Sargent.
Palmer is particularly known for his winter landscapes with their emphasis on light and ambiance. For those he became known as the "painter of the American winter." In 1887 Palmer was awarded the Hallgarten prize from the National Academy of Design which recognized his “outstanding†work at only the age of thirty-three. Palmer exhibited widely, with shows at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the National Academy of Design, among others.
