19th century rare Chinese export famille rose porcelain oval platter and mazzarene decorated in the Rose Medallion pattern with cartouches of Mandarin scenes, birds, and flowers against a hand-painted floral and butterfly ground. This was a popular pattern in the 19th century; however, this service is marked with a bespoke family crest along the reverse of both dishes. This crest reads with a family motto, "PRENEZ-GARDE," dated "1869," and depicts a demi-cat salient. This motto was used by several families, a prominent one being Macintosh of Scotland. However, there could be an American connection through the Scottish Rickard family whose descendant William Rickard migrated to Newfoundland and then on to America where he became a noted chemist and metallurgist.
