Jane Peterson (American, 1876-1965). Oil on canvas painting depicting a purple vase full of nine purple, orange, white, and yellow zinnias. Signed along the lower left. Label on verso inscribed "9 Zinnias and Purple Vase." Metal nameplate affixed along the front of the frame reads: "Nine Zinnias and Purple Vase. 1876. Jane Peterson. 1965."

Born in Elgin, Illinois in 1876, Jane Peterson was an advocate for color and the vibrancy of the landscapes in which she found herself. A graduate of the Pratt Institute and the Art Students' League at the turn of the century, Peterson primarily worked in an Impressionist manner, painting landscapes and still lifes in oil, watercolor, and gouache paints. Upon her leave from the Art Students' League, Peterson was invited to tour Europe with one of her professors at Pratt, Henry Snell, and his wife, Florence. Over the course of her extended stay in Europe after the Snell's returned to America, Peterson met and studied with a myriad of contemporaries with a similar spirit including Frank Brangwyn, Jacques-…mile Blanche, Gertrude Stein, Francis Hopkinson Smith, and JoaquÏn Sorolla y Bastida.

After her decade and a half long pilgrimage throughout the world, working in places like Venice, London, Egypt, Turkey, and Spain, Peterson returned to America where she became an instructor at the Art Students' League in 1912. While traveling was not as frequent as it once was, her memories of the unreal landscapes that she visited and the beautiful rose gardens she was enamored with shone through in her work. "Nine Zinnias and Purple Vase," finished in the year of Peterson's passing, is then a final love letter to Europe and the great impact it had had on her life.
