Lot Essay:
Jacques Villon, born Emile Mery Frederic Gaston Duchamp, was a French cubist and abstract artist. He was the elder brother from the artistically talented family consisting of Marcel Duchamp, Raymond Duchamp-Villon, and Suzanne Duchamp-Crotti. While initially influenced by the works of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Edgar Degas, he later became involved in fauvism, Cubism, and abstract impressionism.

In 1911, he and his brother Raymond became figures in the Puteaux Group (Section d'Or) which consisted of the artists Albert Gleizes, Jean Metzinger, Robert Delaunay, Henri le Fauconnier, Fernand Leger, and Marie Laurencin. This section would face collective controversy after their spring 1911 show, which would bring Cubism to the attention of the general public.

Unframed; height: 15 in x width: 18 1/4 in. Framed; height: 19 1/4 in x width: 22 1/4 in.
