Chinese linen scroll painting depicting a brown dog standing in a landscape with blossoming lilies. With numerous red ink stamps throughout the painting; signed Han Huang. Similar in style to works painted by the Jesuit brother Giuseppe Castiglione (Italian, 1688-1766). Castiglione worked as an artist in the Imperial court of three Qing emperors.
Provenance: By repute, purchased in London in 1967; Private Minnesota Collection.
Sight; height: 41 in x width: 22 in. Framed; height: 51 in x width: 31 1/2 in x 1 in.
The colors are bold and deep. The sheet is toned. The surface is stable. There no losses. There are creases and tears throughout. There is one tear in the upper left and one tear in the upper right quadrant. There are creases in the upper left quadrant, one to the left of the lily, one to the right of the mouth of the dog, and one across the end of the tail of the dog. There are creases all throughout the margins. Framed under plexiglass, there is a scuff to the plexiglass in the lower right quadrant. Not examined out of frame. Wear to the frame.
