Archaic Chinese carved stone sculpture depicting the of head of Buddha or Shakyamuni, Northern Qi dynasty, ca. 550-577 AD. With finely carved, rounded features including softly curved, downcast eyes and a gentle, meditative expression that reflects spiritual tranquility. The hair of the sculpture is rendered in meticulous detail, with small intricate curls that ascend towards the ushnisha. The calcifications suggest the sculpture’s venerable history and its role as a revered object of devotion as well as its history as a buried object. Mounted on a custom minimalist lacquered wooden stand.

There is evidence of an inclusion running from the right cheek back through the right ear and into the hair. Wear to the neck where it was removed from a body. General wear throughout as expected from the elements.
