William Morris Hunt (American, 1824-1879). Oil on board painting titled "Return of the Soldier" depicting a solitary figure walking through a landscape towards a house partially obscured by a hill, 1863. Signed along the lower left. With a label affixed to the verso with the title, artist information, and date.
Sight; height: 14 1/2 in x width: 19 1/2 in. Framed; height: 21 1/2 in x width: 26 1/2 in.
The colors are bold and bright. There are no major losses, tears, or scratches. There are a few scuff marks throughout, one of note is along the bottom of the upper right quadrant, measuring approximately 1 1/2 inches. There are a few minute areas of inpainting, in particular along the bottom of the upper right quadrant that is beneath the tree. Throughout the extreme upper left corner and along the perimeter of the painting, expertly applied inpainting is present. There is wear to the frame, in particular on the inner corners. Not inspected out of frame.
