Otto van Veen (1556-1629), engravings by Antonio Tempesta (1555-1630), "Batavorum cum Romanis Bellum, a Corn. Tacito lib. IV & V Hist olim descriptum, figuris nunc aeneis expressum," Antwerp, 1612. This very popular historical work features heroic allegorical illustrations based on Tacitus's history of the war between the Romans and Batavians. Van Veen (also known as Vaenius) was court painter to Alessandro Farnese and was a teacher of Peter Paul Rubens.
