Utagawa Hiroshige (Japanese, 1797-1858). Woodblock print on paper titled "Shono," number 46 from the series "Gojusan tsuji meisho zue (The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road)," ca. 1840s. Depicting a road with a large bonfire.
Sight; height: 9 in x width: 14 1/4 in. Sheet; height: 11 1/2 in x width: 15 1/2 in.
No major tears or losses. The sheet is toned. There is a crease down the upper right quadrant, measuring approximately 4 inches. There are some areas of discoloration, possibly ink transfer, across the upper right quadrant. There is a minute spot of loss in the lower left quadrant. Soiling throughout the margins. The sheet is affixed along the edges to a sheet of paper. Along the recto there are several spots of adhesive residue. No signs of restoration under UV light.
