Sevres style French old Paris porcelain plate. Painted with a portrait of Mademoiselle Gabrielle Emilie Le Tonnelier de Breteuil, Marquise du Chatelet (better known simply as Emilie du Chatelet) (French, 1706-1749), a French natural philosopher and mathematician. She is framed by three floral bouquets surrounded by gilt scrollwork against a turquoise blue (bleu celeste) ground. Marked along the underside with Sevres marks indicating a firing date of 1837 and a painting date of 1844.
Diameter: 9 1/4 in.

The plate is in generally good condition. There is a loss to the golden gilding below one of the flowers. No visible chips or dents. There are two lines of cracks to the left side of the female figure; they are repaired from the back, visible in the lot listing. When inspected under UV light, there were no other areas that seem to be restored. To the right side of the figure, there is a 1/2 inch long residue on the surface. Along the underside, there is a white accretion to the signature, visible in lot listing; there is adhesive residue in the center. Wear to the footrim consistent with age and use.
