Abuíl-Qasem Ferdowsi (d. ca. 1020 CE), the "Shahnameh" (Shah-nama, Shahnama). This manuscript on paper was produced in 1565, likely in Safavid Persia. The text is in black nasta'liq arranged in four blue and gold outlined columns with red headings. There is one illuminated headpiece on the first page. The colophon on the final page is dated 1565. Illustrations are Qajar, ca. 19th century, finely executed in ink, wash, and gold, evoking earlier Safavid images. Rebound ca. 19th century in dark goatskin, possibly at the same time as the illustrations were added. There is a small Perso-Arabic seal impression which reads Nader Muhammad, dated 1252 Hijri (1836/7 CE).
Height: 14 in x width: 9 in.
