"The path of the shaman begins in childhood, when the parents educate the child about the Huichol tradition and the inhabitants of the mystical realm. The children are told of the powers of the hallucinogenic plants and animals with shamanic powers. As the children grow older, their sensitivity to spirit beings increases, and their healing powers begin to manifest. The shamanic apprentices acquire numerous power objects and spirit allies who aid them in their shamanic skills. Most important, they acquire the skills to communicate directly with animal and plant spirits."
