Pair of Chinese Export Victorian carved arm chairs. The frames are constructed from rich, smoothly carved rosewood, traditional for Chinese furniture, and feature a curved backrest with scrolling armrests on c-scroll supports. The chairs rest on ring turned baluster tapering legs with brass caps on the feet. The chairs are sumptuously upholstered with muted blue, green, and yellow fabric with a foliate that resembles the tops of trees moving in the wind, providing an almost whimsical air of movement to these stately chairs. These easy chairs, made in China for the English market, show the way expert Chinese artisans adapted their work to European aesthetics. Subtle details, such as the design of the upholstery and the carving of the rosewood, were intended to provide the Victorian market with an hint of the Chinese styles so popular at the time, while still remaining in the European decorative tradition. Acquired in China in the 1930s. Height: 37 in x width: 25 in x depth: 23 in.
