Leon Golub (American, 1922-2004). Oil painting on board depicting a surrealist landscape with layers of thick, textural impasto. Signed along the lower right.
This surrealist landscape showcases Golub’s gift for creating uncomfortable sensations in the viewer. Craggy, striking shapes rise up from the ground under a swirling, multicolored sky. The hills and stones are given dimension and texture by layers and layers of many-colored paint. There is tremendous movement throughout the sky; the clouds seem to boil and bubble and the wind whistle between the sharp, vertical edges of the features of the land. The jutting hills resemble faces, contorted and screaming with gaping, toothy maws. This landscape is an unsettling, almost disturbing experience, even as it is simply a landscape.Height: 12 5/8 in x width: 19 5/8 in.
