Birney Quick was one of Minnesota’s renowned artists of the 20th century, positively impacting countless people over the years as both a teacher and an accomplished fine artist. Born in 1912 in Proctor, Minnesota, he grew up in Duluth. Birney Quick is known for both easel and mural paintings, illustrations, and ink drawings. In 1947, as part of the Minneapolis School of Art’s summer program, Birney Quick and Byron Bradley started the Grand Marais Outdoor School of Painting, which in 1956, became the Grand Marais Art Colony, with Quick and Bradley as sole owners. In 1975, Quick was named an Outstanding Educator of America.
