Lot Essay:
Matt Johnson is a contemporary artist known for his innovative approach to sculpture and mixed media, exploring the intersections of identity, culture, and the human experience through visual humor and paradox. Born and raised in New York, he obtained a Bachelor's of Fine Art from the Maryland Institute College of Art and a Master's of Fine Art from the University of California - Los Angeles. As a former student of Charles Ray and contemporary of Tom Friedman, his work is characterized by a keen sensitivity to form and material, transforming everyday objects into profound statements using contrast and wit. His ability to weave narrative into his art invites viewers to engage with his pieces on both emotional and intellectual levels, encouraging contemplation of the deeper meanings embedded within.

In his notable work "The Pianist (After Robert J. Lang)," Johnson pays homage to the titular American physicist and origami artist, integrating the intricate folding techniques and geometric precision of origami into a striking, massive sculpture. This piece showcases a dynamic interplay of shapes, each fold meticulously crafted to reflect the delicate balance between structure and fluidity. The construction and its magnitude not only emphasize the technical prowess involved but also imbues the figure with a sense of movement and rhythm, mirroring the act of musical performance.

Height: 57 in x width: 127 in x depth: 85 in.

Condition

Due to the nature of the work, it is difficult to discern whether there is any damage; however, there are no major visible losses or restorations. One of the piano legs to the right of the pianist is slightly loose. There is wear to the tarp throughout including loose and deplying threads, pin holes, and scuffs along the edges. There are creases, areas of adhesive residue, and discoloration throughout the work where the tarp is folded onto or affixed to itself, possibly original to the artistic process. Dust and debris gathered throughout.
