Lot Essay:
Jerome Witkin has been described as one of America's foremost figurative painters. His works often deal with political, social, and cultural themes as well as portraiture. He has been described as "a virtuoso figurative painter whose work mixed elements of the old masters, social realism, and Abstract Expressionism."

His works often are categorized by three explorations: first, the creation of a realistic pictorial form influenced by Abstract Expressionism; second, implications surrounding the death of his father and themes of mortality in underlying personal and social relationships; third, "realist" denunciations of human rights issues.

His works are included in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Hirshhorn Museum.

Unframed; height: 108 in x width: 63 in. Framed; height: 109 in x width: 64 in.
