Group of three Korean hairpins (ca. 1900) decorated with dragon heads.

Called Binyeo, one would be able to discern another's social class based on the material and decoration of the pin. Additionally the shape of the jamdu (pin head) signified auspicious symbols such as longevity, health and wealth. In the case of these hairpins, the gilt metal and jamdu shaped like dragons were often worn by the upper-class and royalty while less intricately ornamented pins made of wood were worn by widows.
