Gibson Byrd (Shawnee, 1923-2002). Oil on canvas painting titled "The Monument" depicting figures walking away from a statue, 1956. Signed and dated along the lower left. With a Milwaukee Journal 75th Anniversary Award slip affixed to the verso.

Byrd was a Shawnee painter and teacher at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. He was a contemporary of other prominent artists including Aaron Bohrod, Warrington Colescott, Raymond Gloeckler, Walter Hamady, Harvey Littleton, Alfred Sessler, John Wilde, and Santos Zingale.

Provenance (by repute): Acquired by the consignor's mother directly from the artist.

Sight; height: 26 in x width: 29 3/4 in. Framed; height: 30 1/4 in x width: 34 1/4 in.

Condition

The painting is in generally good condition. There are no rips, major losses, or repairs when inspected under UV light. There is one minute chip along the show of the right-most figure; visible in the lot listing. Some extremely light wear along the extreme edges of the canvas. The canvas is quite loose in the frame due to the nature of the framing. Some wear along the extreme edges of the canvas along the verso that does not affect the recto. Wear to the frame.
