Friedel Dzubas was born in Berlin in 1915. He began his artistic training with Paul Klee at the Prussian Academy of Fine Art. In 1939, he fled Nazi Germany for the United States, where he fell in with the Abstract Expressionists. He became friends with major figures in the Abstract Expressionist movement such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Adolph Gottlieb, even sharing a studio with Helen Frankenthaler. His work is characterized by his gestural brushwork and broad swaths of powerful colors, and he is often associated with the Color Field movement.
