Francois Morellet (French, 1926-2016). Abstract sculpture titled "Sphere-Trames," 1962, made up of stainless steel rods. One of an edition of 100.

Francois Morellet is well known for his hypnotic and avant-garde sculpture work, and his use of unusual materials, shapes, and forms. He initially became interested in art as a representational painter, but soon turned to abstraction and began pushing the boundaries of what was considered art.

He began the Sphere-Trames series in 1960, creating ìcellular spheresî made up of welded metal rods. These spherical grids make use of the superimposition of layers to interact with the viewer; as the viewer moves around the artwork, the form shifts and changes, the grid disappearing and reappearing. He made multiple series of these spheres, experimenting with different sizes and materials. This present lot is a lovely example of a smaller sphere from the series.

Diameter: 14 in x circumference: 44 1/2 in.
