18th/19th c. English School half-length portrait of a woman, oil on oval shaped canvas. The sitter is depicted in diaphanous white clothing against a dark background, with a large dark hat perched on her elaborate coiffeur. She cradles a book in her lap. A pencil inscription along the stretcher reads "Mrs. Ludlam (wife of Capt. Ludlam), mother's aunt, 1915."
