Emmanuel Jakob Handmann (Swiss, 1718-1781). Oil on canvas portrait of Johann Rudolf Kirchberger (1700-1789). The brass nameplate on the frame reads: " JOH R.R. / AE 53 / Painted by Handman. 1753." One initial is miswritten on the gilt plaque: the last R should be a K. A paper label along the frame verso reads: "O.E. Clifford, Picture Restorer." Thomas Frievogel, author of "Emanuel Handmann (1718-1781): Ein Basler Portratist im Bern des ausgehenden Rokoko," Murten 2002, has confirmed the authenticity of this painting.

The largest areas of inpainting include the subject's hand, the left side of his wig, his left shoulder, the background along the upper right quadrant, and along the edges. Along the verso, the area of restoration along the subject's wig can be seen. There is a restoration to the frame along the lower right corner, visible under UV light. Wear to the frame throughout.
