Louis Maurer (German/American, 1832-1932) for Nathaniel Currier, United States. Lithograph titled "Celebrated Horse Lexington (5 Yrs. Old) by "Boston" Out of "Alice Carneal": Bred by Dr. Warfield, Owned by R. Ten Broeck, Esq. Winner of the Great 4 Mile Match for $20,000 against "LeCompte's" Time of 7:26. Over the Metairie Course. New Orleans, April 2nd 1855. Won in 7:19 3/4!!!" The print depicts a brown racing horse standing in a field, 1855. The margins with further race information.

Currier and Ives was founded by Nathaniel Currier (American, 1813-1888) in 1835 as "the Grand Central Depot for Cheap and Popular Prints," but changed its name with the addition of James Merritt Ives (American, 1824-1895) in 1857. The company created over 7000 popular lithographs depicting American life until 1907.

Condition

The sheet is toned. There is a small chip along the right edge. Discoloration and soiling along the lower edge along the recto and verso; the work has possibly been treated along the lower edge. Two pencil inscriptions along the verso: one is illegible, the other reads "6-25-85." The work is not framed.
