Barton Stone "B.S." Hays (American, 1826-1914). Oil on canvas landscape painting depicting sheep in a grove of trees. Signed along the lower center.

Although Hays initially gained popularity for his portraiture - such as his painting of then-governor of Indiana, William Henry Harrison - his focus shifted to still life paintings after his move to Minneapolis and it was these realistic paintings that were his most popular. He also created panorama paintings such as his painting depicting scenes from Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin."

Sight; height: 19 1/2 in x width: 23 1/2 in. Framed; height: 23 1/2 in x width: 27 1/2 in.

Condition

No visible tears, creases, or losses. No visible sign of restoration under UV light. To the upper right quadrant, there is an area that appears to have a possibility to be restored when inspected under UV light; however, it seems reasonable to assume that it is not a restoration given that the same appears throughout the woods; please request UV light photos if desired. To the center of the recto, there is an area with very light paint cracks; please see the listing image. To the left center, there is a circular area where the canvas is loose. The verso could not be inspected due to the nature of how the painting is framed. Very light wear to the frame. Dust collected along the lower side of the frame, which can be easily cleaned.
