Album of Japanese Edo period Tosa School portrait paintings in color and gold on silk of the 24 Generals of Shingen Takeda (1521-1573), a powerful daimyo of the Sengoku period. Takeda was known for his military prowess, and during the Edo period, his 24 generals became a popular subject for art and theatre, especially ukiyo-e and bunraku. The portraits are housed in a custom wooden box with a calligraphic inscription along the lid reading "Shin gokusaishiki, Singen nijushi sho, Tosa histu" ("Fully brilliant colored, Twenty-four generals of Takeda Shingen, painted by the Tosa school").
