Mid-19th century oil on canvas portrait painting of St. Bernard. Originally from the Spring Bank Abbey Monastery in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.
Unframed; height: 38 3/4 in x width: 29 in x depth: 1 in. The colors are darkened and faded. There is craquelure throughout and stretcher bar marks along the edges. There is a 1 1/2 inch long tear just to the right of the figure's shoulder; there are some paint losses along this tear. There is a minute hole in the figure's neck. There are small paint losses throughout, mainly along the edges. There are a few small impressions along the surface of the work. Due to the thick and uneven varnish, it is difficult to discern the extent of any possible restorations. The extreme edges of the canvas are brittle. There are numerous small tears and losses throughout the edges. The painting is not framed. Some dust gathered along the verso.
