17th century Chinese parcel-gilt bronze censer or incense burner with Hu Wenming mark. The top band with scrollwork; the lower rim with scrolling floral and foliate motifs; the central register with mythical beasts and creatures against a landscape. The background with finely incised lines. With two handles in the form of open-mouthed dragons breathing fire. Inscribed along the base with a six-character Yunjian Hu Wenming zhi (Made by Hu Wenming of Yunjian) mark. With further painted characters along the underside.Height: 3 1/2 in x width: 9 in x depth: 6 1/4 in.
Condition
There are no major dents, bends, breaks, or restorations. Wear to the exterior commensurate with age and use. Trace amounts of the original gilt decoration remain. Wear to the footrim consistent with age and use. Patinated throughout. Along the interior there are a few small encrustations. Verdigris patination throughout the interior. Some dirt and dust collected along the interior.
