Description:

William Louis Sonntag (American, 1822-1900). Monumental Hudson River School oil on canvas painting titled "Afterglow, Massanutten Mountains," 1865, depicting a hazy river landscape in the rosy glow of sunset. Signed and dated along the lower left. Inkstamped along the verso with "Theodore Kelley Artist's Colorman," a supplier of artist's supplies. An early label from Chapellier Galleries is affixed along the stretcher.

Provenance: Museum Art Exchange Inc., New York and Boston; Chapellier Galleries, New York; The Collection of Mrs. George Arden; Christie's, New York, December 6, 1991, lot 32; The Collection of an Important Minnesota Institution.

  • Dimensions: Unframed; Height: 36 1/4 in x width: 56 in. Framed; Height: 49 in x width: 68 1/2 in.
  • Condition: The artwork is in good condition considering its age and size. The painting surface is clean. There are no visible cracks to the paint layer. There is some paint loss to the extreme right edge of the canvas, and some rubbing to the edges from contact with the rabbet. There is a small triangular fragment accretion along the left edge of the artwork. There are a few scattered small areas of restoration throughout, visible under UV. There is a larger restoration to the sky, which has been patched along the verso. There is a second patch visible along the verso to the lower left quadrant of the painting; when the patched inspected under UV from the recto there are no areas that fluoresce. There is soiling and two visible patches along the verso. The canvas is not lined. There is one broken stretcher key. The modern frame is in good condition with some wear.
